מפת המשחק מציגה בפנינו איים טרופיים, המניבים לשחקנים עצים, אננס, זהב ומשאבים נוספים בהתאם לתוצאות הטלת הקובייה. כל פיראט מתחיל, מקבל שתי מאורות פיראטים, מהן יוכל להפליג לאיים הסמוכים בעזרת ספינות ולהרחיב את תחומי שליטתו. כל מאורה נוספת שיוסיף לרשותו, תאפשר לו לזכות במשאבים רבים יותר שיאפשרו לו להשיט ספינות, לבנות מאורות ולבסס את קשריו עם קוקו, התוכי האדיב. כמו במשחק קטאן הקלאסי, גם כאן מוזמנים השחקנים לסחור ולהחליף משאבים עם הקופה או עם שחקנים אחרים, לפי רצונם. הראשון שיבסס לעצמו שבע מאורות פיראטים, מנצח את כולם!
